Once Azure Backup Server service is installed. Launch Azure Backup Server console and Create a Protection Group

What is a Protection Group – A protection group is a collection of data sources, such as volumes, shares, or application workloads which have a common backup and restore settings. Ideally, you will create multiple protection groups based on the backup goals defined in your organization. for example – if you have multiple SQL servers which need to be backed-up multiple time in a day versus an Active Directory server which needs to be backed-up once a day. you will create different protection groups for SQL backup and Active Directory backup.

How to create a Protection Group
Protection > New > New Protection Group

Once launched, select the backup type as Server and then select the server from available member list where Azure Backup Server agent is installed and the backup workload application is running. in this example, we are backing-up a SQL database from the Azure Backup Server itself

Provide the name to protection group and select the protection method as cloud

Select the retention range.

Select the storage volume where backup should reside locally for short-term backup

Select Automatically over the network and now. if you want to schedule the backup for future date and time, select later

Keep the option default for consistency check

Select the cloud protection to protect the data on Azure

Select the backup schedule – I have selected daily.

if your backup goal is to keep a weekly, monthly and yearly backup. select it or deselect it to keep it daily backup.

Select automatically over the network. if you have a huge size of data, you can also take offline backup and move to Azure using Azure Import/Export service

Summary of backup configuration.

This will complete the protection group wizard and backup is successfully scheduled.
